Pilgrims

Sacred Walks for Awareness, Growth and Connections.

We have found that the vision of shalom – where God, people and place live in harmony together – can be experienced in tangible ways on a pilgrimage. Out of our comfort zones, on an adventure with others in special places, unique self awareness and receptivity to God’s shalom can happen. Inside and out, body and soul, new connections, renewal and growth become possible in new ways. Shalom, once experienced, can renew us for a deeper love of the people and places we live with in regular life.

Why not join us for one of our pilgrimages in 2024?

‘Tour of Hope’ (Winson Green)

Pilgrimages are sacred walks for awareness, growth and connections. Why can’t this happen in inner city Birmingham? We offer this pilgrimage in our Seedbeds founding place, Winson Green, as a day immersed in the life of a local community that has seen remarkable renewal from the ground up through strength based approaches. Guided by Rev Dr Ash Barker, resident of Winson Green, local Minister and founder of Seedbeds. Listen to local voices who have used what they have in their hands to see change happen. See the place-making work in hospitality, schools, parks and churches. Connect with the history – old and new – that makes Winson Green so special. Experience hope in what is possible for you. Come with a group from your local community for a fun, inspirational and hope-full day.

We hope that this pilgrimage experience will help:

  • Spark your prophetic imagination.
  • Connect you deeper with God and comrades in Shalom.
  • Nurture hope and help prepare you for what is possible where you live.

St Cuthbert’s Way (Melrose to Holy Island)

St Cuthberts Way has been described as one of the most beautiful, varied and enjoyable long distance walking routes in Britain, and one of Scotlands Great Trails. Bridging the national border between Scotland and England, this inspiring 100km (62.5 miles) cross-border route links Melrose in the Scottish Borders, where St. Cuthbert started his religious life in 650AD, with Holy Island off the Northumberland Coast, his eventual resting place and his original pilgrimage shrine.

Although inspired by St. Cuthbert, this can become far more than a historical walk. Beyond the picturesque landscapes and historical landmarks, this can become a pilgrimage and a profound odyssey of inner growth. It invites reflection, offering moments for contemplation amidst nature’s beauty and the rich tapestry of history. Pilgrims engaging in St. Cuthbert’s Way embark not just on a physical trek but a spiritual quest, where the ancient path can become a conduit for personal transformation, fostering a deeper understanding of oneself, the earth and the divine.

There are 5 main stages of St. Cuthberts Way that you can look forward to. Although we do adapt these for the group and to ensure a safe passage walking onto Holy Island together at low tide.

This Pilgrimage includes:

Day 1 - 24km

Melrose to Harestanes Visitor Centre

Day 2 - 28km

Harestanes Visitor Centre to Kirk Yetholm

Day 3 - 19km

Kirk Yetholm to Wooler

Day 4 - 19km

Wooler to Fenwick

Day 5 - 10km

Fenwick to Lindisfarne

Details of the terrain can be found here.

More details on the programme

We meet at Melrose Abbey Melrose at midday on day one. Please make your own way there, though there is an option to join the support van leaving from Winson Green in Birmingham if that is convenient.

We stay at the same Walkerwalls Bunkhouse near Wooler for 5 nights so you dont have to carry all of your baggage each day. There are single bunkbeds dormitory style and need a sleeping bag, towel and be prepared to share a room with others. If you want a more comfortable stay you can book your own private accommodation in Wooler and be picked up each morning and dropped off each night after dinner at the bunk house.

There is a support van with a designated driver and guide (Dave Mann) that picks us up from our accommodation each day, gets us to the right place to start our walk each morning, meets us at different sections during the day and drives us back to our accommodation each night. This helps with safety and accessibility for pilgrims.

We offer experienced guides (Ash Barker with Faith and Scott Brennan) who help navigate on the way and facilitate the group sharing in a morning reflection, mid-day prayers on the way and a debrief at night. No religious background is necessary to be open to this experience.

All main meals are provided. Basic breakfast of toast and cereal. You prepare your own packed lunch the night before with bread and spreads provided. We share a hot meal together at night. If you want to bring any special snacks, food or drinks to share you can do that too.
